The LORD also will be a high tower for the oppressed,

A high tower in times of trouble;

For thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire,

Thy judgements are far above out of his sight:
As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.
He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved:
To all generations I shall not be in adversity.
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and 7
' oppression :

Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: 8
In the covert places doth he murder the innocent:
His eyes are privily set against the helpless.
He lurketh in the covert as a lion in his den :
He lieth in wait to catch the poor:

9

8

He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him
in his net.

He croucheth, he boweth down,

And the helpless fall by his strong ones.
He saith in his heart, God hath forgotten:
He hideth his face; he will never see it.
Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand :
Forget not the "poor.

Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God,
And say in his heart, Thou wilt not require it?
Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest "mischief 14
and spite, to take it into thy hand:

The 'helpless committeth himself unto thee;
Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.

15 Break thou the arm of the wicked;

What can the righteous do?

4 The LORD is in his holy temple,

The LORD, his throne is in heaven;

His eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of

men.

5 The LORD trieth the righteous:

But the wicked and him that loveth violence
his soul hateth.

6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be
the portion of their cup.

A Psalm of David.

Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth ;

For the faithful fail from among the children
of men.

I

They speak vanity every one with his neigh- 2
bour :

With flattering lip, and with a double heart, do
they speak.

The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips,

The tongue that speaketh great things:

3

Who have said, With our tongue will we pre- 4 vail;

3

Our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

For the spoiling of the poor, for the sighing of 5 the needy,

Now will I arise, saith the LORD;

I will set him in safety at whom they puff.
The words of the LORD are pure words;

As silver tried in a furnace on the earth,
Purified seven times.

Thou shalt keep them, O LORD,

Thou shalt preserve them from this generation

for ever.

The wicked walk on every side,

When vileness is exalted among the sons of

men.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

How long, O LORD, wilt thou forget me for
ever?

How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
Having sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O LORD my God:

Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of

Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against
him;

Lest mine adversaries rejoice when I am moved.
But I have trusted in thy mercy;

My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation :

6 I will sing unto the LORD,

Because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
I The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.
They are corrupt, they have done abominable
works;

There is none that doeth good.

2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the
children of men,

To see if there were any that did 'understand,
That did seek after God.

3 They are all gone aside; they are together be-
come filthy;

There is none that doeth good, no, not one.

4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? Who eat up my people as they eat bread,

And call not upon the LORD.

5 There were they in great fear :

For God is in the generation of the righteous. 6 Ye put to shame the counsel of the poor,

2 Because the LORD is his refuge.

7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!
