The "Liver" divination texts as well as the astrological texts of the Babylonians contain numerous historical allusions that are of considerable value.') It is my purpose ere long to collect them and discuss them in detail. Meanwhile I beg to call attention to one that furnishes a detail in the career of Urumuš, one of the early rulers of Kish, whose importance is sufficiently attested by the circumstance of his having subjugated Elam and Barahsu.2) From the fact that votive inscriptions of this ruler have been found at Nippur3) and Sippar, 4) we may further conclude that he exercised a supremacy over southern Babylonia. He is, therefore, to be placed in the front rank of the early rulers and conquerers in the Euphrates valley. A reference in the divination texts shows that his reign ended in internal disturbances and that he died a violent death.
