Πάθει Μάθος.

I KNOW is all the mourner saith:

Knowledge by suffering entereth,
And Life is perfected by Death.

Glory to God-to God! he saith
Knowledge by suffering entereth,
And Life is perfected by Death!

THE ANGEL OF PATIENCE.

O weary hearts, to mourning homes, God's meekest Angel gently comes: No power has he to banish pain, Or give us back our lost again; And yet, in tenderest love, our dear And Heavenly Father sends him here.

There's quiet in that Angel's glance,
There's rest in his still countenance !
He mocks no grief with idle cheer,
Nor wounds with words the mourner's ear;
But ills and woes he may not cure

He kindly trains us to endure.

Angel of Patience! sent to calm
Our feverish brows with cooling palm;
To lay the storms of hope and fear,
And reconcile life's smile and tear;
The throbs of wounded grief to still,
And make our own our Father's will!

The Angel of Patience.

27

O thou who mournest on thy way,
With longings for the close of day,
He walks with thee, that Angel kind,
And gently whispers, "Be resigned:
Bear up, bear on, the end shall tell
The dear Lord ordereth all things well!"

VIA CRUCIS VIA LUCIS.

HROUGH night to light! - And though to mortal eyes

Creation's face a pall of horror wear,

Good cheer! good cheer! The gloom of midnight flies;

Then shall a sunrise follow, mild and fair.

Through storm to calm! And though his thunder-car

The rumbling tempest drive through earth and sky,

Good cheer! good cheer! The elemental

war

Tells that a blessed, healing hour is nigh.

Through frost to spring! And though the biting blast

Of Eurus stiffen nature's juicy veins, Good cheer! good cheer! When winter's wrath is past,

Soft-murmuring spring breathes sweetly o'er the plains.

Through strife to peace! And though, with bristling front,

A thousand frightful deaths encompass

thee,

Good cheer! good cheer! Brave thou the battle's brunt

For the peace-march and song of victory.

Through toil to sleep! And though the sultry noon,

With heavy, drooping wing, oppress thee

now,

Good cheer! good cheer! The cool of evening soon

Shall lull to sweet repose thy weary brow.

Through cross to crown! And though thy spirit's life

Trials untold assail with giant strength, Good cheer! good cheer! Soon ends the bitter strife,

And thou shalt reign in peace with Christ at length.

And though the midnight find thee weeping still,
