Judge Tennant M. Smallwood is a native of a small cotton mill city where he worked at various jobs to earn money to attend college. He worked his way thru college and law school. He served in churches and worked in law until he was appointed a judge in municipal court where he served from 1968 to 1994. He developed many programs such as a DUI Counter Attack program and a Defensive Driver program. He was one of only eight judges in the U.S. to receive an award for traffic court excellence. In 1994 Judge Smallwood was elected to circuit court where he presides over jury trials some of which are complex. Judge Smallwood was re elected without opposition in 2000.
