I know that everywhere the heavens Now darkly frown, now smile so bright, That everywhere an eye believing Beholds the starry host by night.

Thus 'tis the same, the same for ever,
That thrills through every human breast;
I see but brothers wheresoever
Mine eyes upon the earthball rest.

A link of that great chain which bindeth The future to the past am I;

I snatch from out the struggling surges The jewel of humanity.

GEIBEL.

AUTUMN SONG.

Now o'er the land, from Heaven,
A flood o daylight streams,

Of azure blue 'tis woven,
And sunny, golden beams.

Fain would again the forest
Bloom ere it bids adieu;
It glows in golden splendour,
And smiles with crimson hue.

Und fern im Glanze schliesset
Sich Berg an Berg gereiht,
Und Sabbathstille fliesset

Im Thale weit und breit.

Was will dichs Wunder nehmen,
O Freund, zu dieser Frist,
Dass deine Brust ihr Grämen
Wie einen Traum vergisst?

Dass du der alten Sorgen
Mit Lächeln nur gedenkst,
Und in den goldnen Morgen
Dich voll und froh versenkst?

O gieb dich hin dem Frieden,
Und sauge diesen Glanz,
Der aller Welt beschieden,
In deine Seele ganz.

Lass Ruh und Lied sich gatten
Bei frommen Harfenklang,
Der letzten Trauer Schatten
Versühne mit Gesang.

Der Sonne heb' entgegen

Den Becher jungen Weins,

Und heischt der Trunk den Segen,

So wünsche segnend eins:

Dass, wenn nach Freud' und Leide

Dein Herz einst brechen will,
Wie dieser Herbst es scheide

So heiter, gross und still.

And purple in the distance
Stand mountains, linked in pride,
The vale in sabbath stillness
Reposes far and wide.

O friend, why in this respite
Should it a wonder seem,
That thus thy breast forgetteth
Its sadness, like a dream?

That thou of byegone sorrows
Dost think but with a smile,
And in the golden morning,
Enraptured, thou dost while?

Thyself to peace resigning,
Drink in with rapture's fire
These glories which around us
Our yearning souls inspire.

Let song to peace be wedded,
'Mid harps' resounding praise;
Appease the ling'ring shadows
Of grief with vocal lays.

Hold up into the sunbeam
The cup of youthful wine,

And wouldst thou ask a blessing,
O let this wish be thine!

"If ever joy or sorrow

"Should break my swelling heart, "O may it, like this Autumn,

"Serene and calm, depart!”

IM APRIL.

Du feuchter Frühlingsabend,
Wie hab' dich so gern-

Der Himmel wolkenverhangen,
Nur hier und da ein Stern.

Wie leiser Liebesodem

Hauchet so lau die Luft,

Es steigt aus allen Thalen
Ein warmer Veilchenduft.

Ich möcht' ein Lied ersinnen,

Das diesem Abend gleich;

Und kann den Klang nicht finden

So dunkel, mild und weich.

SEHNSUCHT.

IN APRIL.

O dewy, sweet spring evening,
Thou art to me so dear;

The skies with clouds are curtained,

A star but here and there.

The air, so warm and balny,
Breathes like the breath of love,
Each breeze a violet perfume
Wafts up to me above.

A song like this sweet evening
I fain would sing; in vain!
The tone, so soft, so gentle,
I never shall attain.

THE LONGING.

I look in the world, and I look in my heart,
Till in mine eye glistening tear-drops start;
The distance beams brightly, so golden and fair,

But the North binds me fast, I shall reach it, O ne'er!
How narrow the bounds, and the world is so vast,
And time fleeth so fast!

I know a land well, where 'mid sunny bright green,
Vines blooming around the sunk temple are seen,
Where the purple wave lashes the shore with its foam,
And the laurel wreath dreams of the minstrels that roam;
It tempteth the senses, it beckons to me,

But in vain would I flee!
