CHEMISTRY.-PART I.

PASS AND FIRST HONOUR PAPER.

N.B.-Candidates are instructed to show the full working of any question involving calculation, and to give equations for, as well as verbal descriptions of, chemical changes.

1. Calculate the weight of marble required for the production of 10 litres of carbon dioxide, measured at 17° C. and a pressure of 752 m.m. of mercury. Given that 1 gramme of hydrogen occupies 11.17 litres at 0° C. and 760 m.m.

2. Excess of barium chloride solution is added to a solution of silver sulphate, and the mixture is filtered. Of what does the residue on the filter consist; and what does the filtrate contain ? Calculate the weight of the precipitate, after washing and drying, if the original silver sulphate weigh 0.52 grammes. Given: Ag 108, Ba = 137.

3. Compare and contrast the metals of the alkalis with the metals of the alkaline earths, having regard to the metals themselves and to their oxides, hydroxides, and chief salts.

4. Give an account of the chemistry of iodine and its chief compounds.

5. Discuss fully the action of heat on the phosphoric acids and their salts.

6. Discuss and illustrate the general analogy between sulphur and oxygen in their compounds, and point out its limitations.

7. State the volume composition of each of the following, and describe experiments by which it may be proved :-(a) Steam, (b) hydrogen chloride, (c) ammonia.
