11. Give some account of the proceedings by which the India Bill of 1783 was defeated, and of the consequences of that defeat.

12. What change in the law was effected by Mr. Fox's Libel Act? What important change was made afterwards, and when?

13. Who were the principal members of the Ministry of All the Talents? With what matters of importance did that Ministry deal? In what year and for what reasons did it resign?

Answer fully and clearly TEN, and only ten, of the following questions.

1. Explain carefully the use of the term "Law" in economic science, and shew how economic laws may be arrived at.

2. What are the chief advantages of co-operation? Mention some of the conditions on which successful co-operation depends.

3. Distinguish carefully Rent, Interest, Profit. How do you account for the fact that different rates of interest may prevail (a) in the same market, (b) in different markets?

4. What conditions must be satisfied in order that an article may be exchangeable?

5. What are the chief causes which produce localization of industry?

6. Compare the advantages and the disadvantages of the entrepreneur system, and explain the causes of its great development during the last fifty

years.

7. State the arguments for and against "profitsharing," and give your own views as to its expediency.

8. State and examine the arguments for and against the proposal that retaliatory duties should be imposed in England on goods sent thither from countries that levy protective duties on English productions.

9. Explain these propositions

(a) Paper money is money on which the seignorage is 100 per cent.

(b) Profits tend to a minimum.

10. Discuss the meaning of the word "free" in each of these phrases-free banking, free education, free labour, free land, free trade, free will.

11. What is the test of the propriety of State interference? Why is it that matters which in one country are proper subjects for governmental control are not so in others?

12. (a) Would general low wages enable a country to undersell its rivals?

(b) Would general high wages prevent a country from underselling its rivals?

Give your reasons.

13. It has been said that the condition of the people of England was better in the fifteenth century than it is in the nineteenth. What general facts would you rely upon to decide the question?

14. The modern industrial world has found it possible to abolish slavery. Cannot it get rid of poverty also?

1. Of what does musical expression consist?

2. Describe the various means of producing variety of accent. Illustrate from Beethoven or Bach.

3. Describe in a few general terms the spirit in which the various themes of the 1st movement of Beethoven's Op. 2, No. 1, should be played (as far as the double bar only), and comment on the

particular technical difficulties to be overcome. Use quotations. Do the same with regard to the first nine bars of No. 2 of J. S. Bach's twopart Inventions; the first two bars of Nos. VIII. and XIV.; the first four bars of No. XIII.

Additional for Honours.

Write a short essay on the 1st movement of Beethoven's Op. 13 as regards the emotional character of the various themes and the technicalities of their expression.

INTERPRETATION OF SPECIFIED WORKS.

THIRD YEAR.

Professor Marshall-Hall.

1. Carefully phrase and put expression marks to the recitative of the Basses in Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

2. Carefully analyze the main points to be brought out in the introduction and closing scene of "Tristan and Isolde," phrasing and adding expression marks where necessary, and noting the fluctuations in Tempo.

3. Write a short essay touching on the main difference in the spirit in which Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Wagner require to be approached to attain an adequate interpretation of their works.
