Consum zubereitet, theils ihre getrockneten Flossen über Maskat und Bombay nach China gebracht.

Auch Perlmutter - Schalen, welche das Meer bei Sturm an den Mâcher-Strand wirft, sammeln die Fischer; nach Perlen und Perlmutter getaucht wird meines Wissens nur in der Nähe Tedjurra's.

Guano findet sich auf der Felseninsel Bur-da-Rebschi (Bur: Berg, Rebsch-Guano), der Brutstätte von Seevögeln. Er wird von den nahewohnenden Sómal, die sich an arabische Unternehmer vermiethen, vom Gestein und aus seinen Furchen gekratzt und auf Barken geladen. Guano wird besonders nach Makallah gebracht, wo er zum Tabakbau Verwendung findet. Vor einigen Jahren soll er auch nach Mauritius verschifft sein. In letzter Zeit hatte ein europäisches Handelshaus aus Aden seinen Agenten hierher gesandt, um Guano zu holen. Derselbe wurde jedoch von den Wer-Singelli beraubt und musste zurückkehren.

Im Ahl-Gebirge findet sich Antimon, das jedoch meines Wissens nur einmal, und zwar von einem arabischen Kaufmann aus Aden geholt wurde. Eine von demselben ausgeschickte zweite Expedition scheiterte, da ihr Anführer, ein Somâli, mit dem Betriebsfond davonging.

Indem ich nun diese vorläufigen Bemerkungen über die Sómal sehliesse, hoffe ich, da ich in nächster Zeit dieses Volk wiederum besuchen werde, bald Eingehenderes berichten zu können.

Man hat neuerdings im Haar ein ethnologisch geeignetes Eintheilungsprincip zu finden geglaubt und dann die Vandiemensländer1) (im Anschluss. an den Homo papua) zu den Ulotrichen gestellt, den Homo australis dagegen den Euthycomi unter den Lissotrichen eingeordnet, obwohl hier verschiedene Beschreibungen) vorliegen, und der Norden des Continents sich wieder (wenn nicht durch malayische oder polynesische Einflüsse verändert) dem Gebiet der Papua3)

Earl) angegeben wird, gelocktes Haar südlich von Port Essington (b. Leichardt), und dort schlicht lang (b. Campbell) oder wollig (b. d'Urville), auch korkzieherartig gewunden (nach Hombron). Im Süden wird krauses Haar erwähnt (mit lockigen Bärten), auch wolliges (b. Strzelecki), im Südosten gekräuselt und am Westernport (b. Peron) lang und glatt. Struppiges Haar beschreibt Koelern (bei Adelaide) schlichtes im Innern, krauses (b. Peron). Am George-Sound bis Perth wird glattes Haar angegeben (b. Salvado) und nach Norden (b. Peron). Das lange und feine, aber wollige Haar ist (nach Hale) durch Mangel an Pflege häufig wie verfilzt (s. Gerland). Das Haar der Tasmanier war wollig kraus (nach Cook).

Papous wird pua-pua (brun foncé) erklärt (nach Marchal). Les Papous du littoral (à Dorey) se distinguent eux-mêmes de ceux, qui habitent les montagnes et qu'ils nomment Arfakis ou Alfakis (Quoy et Gaimard). La forme bombée du front fait que leur angle facial n'est point trop aigu (chez les noirs de l'île Vanikoro). The practice of boring the septum of the nose has been generally observed among the wild Papuans (Earle) 1828. Gaimard). According to Bruyn Kops the skin of many of the natives were marked with scars, which have been produced by applications of fire (in Neu-Guinea). Auf Neu-Guinea besteht das Tättowiren (Panaya) in Strichen. The wolly or twisted hair is peculiar to the full blooded Papuans. A comparatively slight mixture with the brown race removes the peculiarity (Earle). The people of Waigiou are not truly indigenous of the island (which possesses no „Alfuros“ or aboriginal inhabitants). They appear to be a mixed race, partly from Gilolo, partly from New-Guinea. Malays and Alfuros from the former island have probably settled here and many of them have taken Papuan wives from Salwatty or Dorey, while the influx of people from those places and of slaves, had led to the formation of a tribe exhibiting almost all the transitions, from a nearly pure Malayan to an entirely Papuan type. The language is entirely Papuan, being that which is used on all the coasts of Mysol, Salwatty, the north-west of New-Guinea, and the islands in the great Geelvink Bay (indicating the way, in which the coast settlements have been found). The fact, that so many of the islands between New-Guinea and the Moluccas (such as Waigiou, Guebe, Poppa, Obi, Batchian, as well as the south and east peninsulas of Gilolo) possess no aboriginal tribes, but are inhabited by people, who are evidently mongrels and wanderers, is a proof of the distinctness of Malayan and Papuan races and the separation of their geographical areas (s. Wallace). Auf Flores finden sich Züge der Papua (nach Moore). The traders (of Dobbo) are all of the Malay race or a mixture of which Malay is the chief ingredient, with exception af a few Chinese. The natives of Aru, on the other hand, are Papuans, with black or sooty brown skins, wolly or frizzly hair, thick-ridged prominent noses, and rather slender limbs (Wallace). Their colour is a deep brown, often approaching to black and the mop-like heads of frizzly hair are considered an onament (s. Wallace). The hill-men or Arfak (in New-Guinea) were generally black, (but some brown like the the Malays), Their hair, though always more or less frizzly, was sometimes short and matted (instead of being long, loose and woolly), as indigeners (s. Neben der „,forme ébouriffée" bei einigen Stämmen Neu-Guinea's, Waigui's, Bouka's, fällt das Haar bei andern (auf Neu-Guinea, Rony, Neu-Bretannien, Neu-Irland) sur les épaules en mèches cordonnées et flottantes (Lesson et Garnot). Die Bewohner der Admiralitäts-Inseln ont les cheveux crépus, et sont dans l'usage de ne laisser des poils sur aucune partie du corps. Il parait que la verre volcanique dont ils arment leurs zagaies, leur sert aussi à se raser (Labillardière). Bei den Bewohnern der Admiralitäts-Inseln hing eine Muschel (bulla ovum) à l'extrémité de la verge, pour cela ils avaient fait une ouverture au-dessous de la partie la plus renflée de cette coquille, afin d'y loger le gland (s. Labillardière). Bougainville sah lange Bärte bei den Bewohnern Neu-Britanniens. Die Insel Nova-Britannia war (nach Dampier) inhabited with strong well-limbed Negroes. Auf der Verräther-Insel (neben den Cocos-Inseln) hiess der Häuptling Latou (nach Schouten). Die Bewohner der Admiralitäts-Inseln waren sehr schwarz (nach Dentrecasteaux). Le Neo-Calédonien, surtout lorsqu'il est échauffé par la marche, exhale une forte odeur sui generis, qui rappelle celle des fauves de grande taille (Patouillet). Kopfentstellungen treten mehrfach in Polynesien hervor, wie auch anderswo. Nach Ovington wurde in Arrakan die Stirn des Kindes mit einer Bleiplatte breit gedrückt (1725). In Yucatan wurde dem mit dem Gesicht auf die Erde gelegten Kiude der Kopf mit zwei Platten zusammengedrückt

(s. Landa). An der Westküste America's zeigen sich im Kunststil polynesische Reminiscenzen und auch sonst. Las Indias son bien agestadas, de muy lindos ojos y de rostro, muy modestas y honestas. Los niños y niñas son blancos y rubios (en la isla St. Catalina). Usan estos Indios de unas grandes cabañas para sus moradas y de vasijas de juncos tapidos, en que tienen y traen agua (Viscain) 1602.

In Ceram and Gilolo a few scattered remnants of the race (of Papuas) still exist, but they hold little or no intercoure with their more civilized neighbours, flying into the thickets (for shelter). The island of Mysol or Mesual is said to have been occupied exclusively by l'apuans (at the europaeen discovery). The island of Ceram, Ceram-Laut, Bo, Poppo and Geby and Patana Hoek, the south-eastern extreme of Gilolo are also occupied by people of the mixed race (the mixture having arisen chiefly from these spots having been the places of refuge for offenders against the regulations established for the monopoly of spices in the Moluccas). The eastern extremity of Ceram, and also the greater portion of the north east of that island, was inhabited by Papuans on the first arrival of Europaeans in the East, but they are now only to be found in the jungles (s. Earle). According to Modera the inhabitants of the interior did not differ in any essential particular from those of the coast (in Triton's bay). The people of Ternate are of three races, the Ternate-Malays (an intrusive Malay race, somewhat allied to the Macassar people, who settled in the country, driving out the indigenes, who were the same, as those of Gilolo), the Orang-Sirani (Nazarenes or Christian descendants of the Portuguese, who resemble those of Amboyna and, like them, speak only Malay) and the Dutch. The people of Kaioa are a mixed race, having Malay and Papuan affinities and are allied to the peoples of Ternate and of Gilolo. They possess a peculiar language (Wallace). Every year they visit the Tenimber, Ké and Aru Islands, the whole north-west coast of New-Guinea from Outanata to Salwatty, and the island of Waigiou and Mysol. They also extend their voyages to Tidore and Ternate, as well as to Banda and Amboyna. Their praus are all made by the Ké-islanders (a race of boatlanders), who annually turn out a hunderd of boats (s. Wallace). The natives of Bouru consist of two distinct races (partially amalgamated). The larger portion are Malays of the Celebes type, often exactly similar to the Tomore people of East Celebes (settled in Batchian), while others altogether resemble the Alfuros of Ceram (in solcher Nennung). The south-west of New-Guinea (Papua Kowiyee or Papua Oren) is inhabited by the most treacherous and bloodthirsty tribes (to the Goram and Ceram traders); in other districts, inhabited by the same Papuan races such as Mysol, Salwatty, Waigiou and some parts of the adjacent coast, the people (by the settlement of traders of mixed breed) have taken the first step in civilization. On the table lands above Dilli (a portuguese settlement on the north-west of the island) some of the villagers have opaque yellow complexion, the exposed parts of the skin being covered with light, brown spots or freekles, and the hair is straight, fine, and of a reddish or dark auburn colour. Every intermediate variety of hair and complexion, between this and the black or deep chocolate colour is short tufled hair of the mountain Papuan, is to be found on Timor (s. Earle). The inhabitants of the south western part of Timor, in the neighbourshood of Coepang (a dutch settlement) are an exceedingly dark, coarse-haired people (s. Earle).
