In the blush of evening mute, Pensive by the wood 1 strayed, Damon sat and played the flute; 'Mid the rocks its echo played, Fal la la &c.
Then he drew me to his side, O how sweet his kisses were!
"Play again, dear youth," I cried, And he played another air, Fal la la &c.
All my joy away is flown, Vanished now is all my peace, And this old familiar tone Ne'er to greet my ear will cease, Fal la la, le ralla &c.
'Twas in a forest, Absorbed in thought,
I roamed, and knew not What there I sought.
I saw a flower O'ershadowed rise, Like stars so beaming, Like bright blue eyes.
Ich wollt' es brechen Da sagt' es fein : Soll ich zum Welken Gebrochen sein?
Ich grub's mit allen Den Würzlein aus, Zum Garten trug ich's Am hübschen Haus.
Und pflanzt' es wieder
Am stillen Ort;
Nun zweigt es immer
Und blüht so fort.
Ein Blumenglöckchen Vom Boden hervor War früh gesprosset Im lieblichen Flor; Da kam ein Bienchen Und naschte fein:
Die müssen wohl beide Für einander sein.
I stooped to pluck it, It gently spoke, "Shall but to wither "My stem be broke ?"
I dug around it, Took roots and all, And laid it under The grotto's wall.
Again I set it,
So still and lone;
It buds and blossoms
Now sweetly on.
From out of the ground A little blue bell
Peeped early forth At the lovely dell; A little bee came, And sipped with glee: For each other made They surely must be.
Das ängstliche Band. Es säuseln die Winde, Es rührt sich der Schiffer. Geschwinde! Geschwinde! Es theilt sich die Welle, Es naht sich die Ferne;
Schon seh' ich das Land.
WILLKOMMEN UND ABSCHIED.
Es schlug mein Herz; geschwind zu Pferde! Es war gethan fast eh' gedacht;
THE OCEAN AT REST.
Silence o'er the water reigns, Motionless now rests the main, And the anxious sailor sees Round about a glassy plain. Not a breath on either side! Awful silence of the grave! In the vast and boundless tide Locked in slumber is each wave.
The fogs disappear,
The heavens are bright,
And Eolus frees
From their prison the winds.
They whistle and roar,
Alert is the sailor.
Come, comrades, be quick!
The billows divide,
The distance draws near;
Land, land I descry.
WELCOME AND PARTING.
How beat my heart! to horse! away! Then quick as thought I sped my flight; Earth slept, rocked by the evening grey, And o'er the mountains hung the night: The oak in misty mantle stood,
A giant with his outspread arms, Where darkness from the grove and wood Spread with its hundred eyes alarms. The Poetry of Germany.
