Notes. This is part of a 'penitential psalm.' It is Assyrian and bilingual. The lines of the obv.(?) are divided in the middle; in the rev.) this division is not apparent. In 1. 3 (Rev.?) there seems to be a space after uttû. The repeated ma-ra = iâti is probably only the be- 5 ginning of the half-line. L. 34. rit-ti-ia not sure. KA (kir) HWB 104b. A-SI-SUR-RA I cannot explain. appu = L. 11/12. ni-tu-tu = SIG-SIG cannot be from natû make.' The 10 root natû SIG-SIG 'beat, strike' would be suitable. Where the readings differ, I have put those of K. 4620 in parentheses. We have here apparently a look at a religious procession to one of the Babylonian temples. L. 12. At the end we may supply i nillik (HWB 1736 et al). ba-lag-gu; for LAK = LAG cf. Sm. 2054, l. 12: ba-lak(g) = DUB; and 1. 18: ba-lak(g)-gu DUB. For the meaning 'crying, lamen- 5 place: ba-lag bi-kit. The meaning of neither of these is sure; 10 they are probably musical instruments. L. 1112. ina is probably to be restored at the beginning. — halhal-la-ti (Sb 258) perhaps 'tambourine' or 'cymbal.' ma-an-si-i, another form of masù; the meaning is unknown. These words occur together V R. 32, 58 ff. b. c. Cf. also REIS. Einl. p. XVII. For the 15 use of ellu here cf. REIS. p. 79, 4: rigim ša ellu išmêma. L. 13. This text has been already used by DELITZSCH, BRÜNNOW, STRASSMAIER, and others; but, as far as I know, has been neither published nor translated heretofore. It is written in Babylonian, is bilingual, and is addressed to Nergal. The scribe has used the Su- 25 merian rather freely (if we are to regard the Sumerian as the original), some words being translated twice, and some not at all. The copy before us was made from an exemplar in Kutha. The town Marad is mentioned twice, and the occasion of the composition of the hymn seems to have been some calamity that befell that place. וצא L. 12. šupû = 30 UD-DU-A, V R. 23, 41/42; BR. 7890; HWB 236b. The pronunciation e-a for UD-DU-A is not sure. It rests on Sb 84: UD-DU = e. gašru KAL-GA; for the pronunciation esig-ga see HWB 223f. BR. 8493 gives IM-TUK = gašru and cites this line.
