This is part of a 'penitential psalm.' It is Assyrian and bilingual. The lines of the obv.(?) are divided in the middle; in the rev.) this division is not apparent. In 1. 3 (Rev.?) there seems to be a space after uttû. The repeated ma-ra = iâti is probably only the be- 5 ginning of the half-line.

of K. 4620 in parentheses. We have here apparently a look at a religious procession to one of the Babylonian temples.

UB (Sb 256) perhaps = 'tambourine'; for a discussion of the word see KB VI, 391. li-li-si = LI-LI-ÉŠ (see Sb 260); for this cf. KB VI, 443. The meaning of neither of these is sure; 10 they are probably musical instruments.

L. 1112. ina is probably to be restored at the beginning. — halhal-la-ti (Sb 258) perhaps 'tambourine' or 'cymbal.' ma-an-si-i, another form of masù; the meaning is unknown. These words occur together V R. 32, 58 ff. b. c. Cf. also REIS. Einl. p. XVII. For the 15 use of ellu here cf. REIS. p. 79, 4: rigim ša ellu išmêma.

L. 13. Semitic: libba linûh kabittaka lipšaḥ; see HWB under nâḥu and pašahu. Properly we should expect HE = lu at the beginning; see however K. 4623, Obv. 14/15; Rev. 7/8 (HWB 453a).

Notes.

This text has been already used by DELITZSCH, BRÜNNOW, STRASSMAIER, and others; but, as far as I know, has been neither published nor translated heretofore. It is written in Babylonian, is bilingual, and is addressed to Nergal. The scribe has used the Su- 25 merian rather freely (if we are to regard the Sumerian as the original), some words being translated twice, and some not at all. The copy before us was made from an exemplar in Kutha. The town Marad is mentioned twice, and the occasion of the composition of the hymn seems to have been some calamity that befell that place.
